November 2013 Summary

In Brief:
Wet and mild for the first half of the month, then dry with average temperatures for most of the remainder.  A windy, showery spell during the third week, and then briefly colder.
Very high pressure for the second and fourth weeks.

On the night of the 25th/26th the temperature dropped to 2.7 degs C, making it the coldest November night for three years.  On the night of 31st October/1st November the temperature did not fall below 15.6 degs C, making it the warmest November night ever at this location*,  beating the 15.3 degs set in 2005 into second place.  Thus the exceptionally mild nights of October continued into the beginning of November.
The average night-time temperature for November 2013 was 9.67 degs C, the second highest since at least 2003, behind 2011's 10.22 degs C.

Due to the cooler second half of the month however, the average daytime temperature for November 2013 stands at 13.41 degs C, which is the fifth lowest since 2003.

Rainfall:
A total of 107.7 mm of rain fell during November 2013, making it the third driest November since 2008. This total was less than half of that of November 2012 [217.8 mm], and a little over half of that of October 2013 [214.4 mm].
Most of the rainfall total had fallen by the 14th, with just 7.4 mm after that.  The wettest spell was over the Remembrance weekend, when 53.6 mm fell between the 8th and 11th, although the wettest day itself was the 3rd, with 22.2 mm.

Note that up to the end of March however, 322.3 mm of rain had fallen in 2013, compared to just 141.4 mm during the same period in 2012.
This means that looking at the period April 1st to November 30th, 733.2 mm of rain fell in 2013, compared to 1072.3 mm during the same period in 2012 [-31.6%]!

October 2013 Summary

In Brief:
Very warm by night and day, and very wet.

Temperature [Night]:
The coolest night of the month was the 10th/11th, when the temperature fell to 8.1 degs C.  This was not the highest minimum for October however, as in October 2006 it did not fall below 8.2 degs C.
The warmest night of the month was the 1st/2nd, when the temperature only fell to 19.1 degs C.  This was the highest ever October minimum at this location* by some margin, as the previous record was 17.0 degs C, set in 2012.  To further illustrate how warm October 2013's nights were, this figure was exceeded twelve times this month!
The average minimum for October 2013 was 15.07 degs C, which was very close to that for September, and unsurprisingly was the highest ever for October at this location*, beating 12.62 from October 2006 into second place by some margin.

Temperature [Day]:
The coolest day of the month was the 10th with 13.8 degs C, and the warmest was the 3rd with 22.7 degs C.  This was the warmest October day ever at this location*, beating 2012's 22.4 into second place.
The average daytime maximum for October 2013 was 18.73 degs C, which secures October 2013 as the warmest October at this location*, pushing 2006's 17.89 degs C into second place.
The temperature exceeded 20 degs C on eight days during the month, which is eight times more than during any other October since at least 2003.  2006, 2011 and 2012 were the only other years this happened, and even then on only one day each.

Rainfall:
214.4 mm of rain fell during October 2013, making it the wettest October at this location since at least 2007.  It was also the wettest of any month since December 2012.  For comparison, 63.8 mm fell in September, and 185.6 mm in October 2012.
The wettest day of the month was the 27th with 39 mm of rain, and there were three other days spread through the month with more than 20 mm, namely the 3rd [30 mm], 16th [22.6 mm] and 21st [23.2 mm].
This meant that dry periods were few and short-lived, with the driest period being the 4th to the 15th with just 6.8 mm.

There were only six completely dry days [2200-2200], which is the equal least [with 2012] since at least 2007, and the fewest of any month since January 2013.  There were also only seven days [2200-2200] with no measurable rain at all.

September 2013 Summary

It was a warmer than average month though, particularly, as in August, at night.

Temperature: [Minimum]:
Night-time temperatures ranged from 10.9 degs C on the night of the 14th/15th, to 19.6 degs C on the night of the 21st/22nd.  This gave an average minimum temperature of 14.94* degs C.  [*see note below].
All these figures were the highest in their categories for September at this location, since at least 2004, overtaking September 2006, which previously held these records with 10.6; 18.8 and 14.71 degs C respectively.

Temperature: [Maximum]:
Maximum temperatures ranged from 16.4 degs C on the 16th, to 23.7 degs C on the 21st.  The 21st was thus the warmest September day at this location since 2007.
The average maximum temperature for the month was 20.02 degs C, making it the second warmest September of the last ten, behind 2006 with 21.38 degs C.
There were a maximum of 16 days this month when the temperature exceeded 20 degs C.  In 2006 there were 22.  The last time the temperature exceeded 25 degs C in September was in 2006.

* There were no individual reports for five days this month, although extremes for this period are still noted.  Normally these short and rare breaks are insignificant in calculating averages, however this break occurred during a spell when night-time minima were high, meaning that all figures 'lost' were above the average without them.   Therefore I have calculated an estimate, which is 15.35 degs C [replacing 14.94].
Using the estimate this September's night-time average temperature is even more significantly the highest of the last ten.

Rainfall:
63.8 mm of rain fell during September 2013, making it the second driest September of the last six, behind 2009, and the third driest month of 2013 behind April and July.  95.5 mm of rain fell during August 2013.

September 2013's 63.8mm is very close to the amount that fell in September 2012, 65.5 mm, but when comparing to last year it should be noted that September 2012 was the only month between June 2012 and January 2013 which had less than 100 mm of rain.

The wettest day of September 2013 was the 6th, when 19.0 mm fell during a spectacular hail-storm which made the news due to it's intensity.
The only other day of the month with more than 7 mm of rain was the 13th with 12.3 mm.  Unfortunately the remainder of the month's rain fell in small amounts, limiting the number of dry spells considerably.  There were only about 11 completely dry days during the month, and the longest run of these was the 1st to the 5th.

Cumulatively, 733.4 mm of rain has now fallen during 2013, compared to 810.3 by the end of September 2012.

There was no thunder during the month.

August 2013 Summary

In Brief:
A very warm month, especially so at night.  Much wetter than July but not exceptionally wet.

Temperature: [Minimum]:
The coolest night of the month was the 19th/20th, when the temperature fell to 13.6 degs C.  This was the highest reading below which the temperature did not fall, for any month ever at this location.*
This exceeds 13.5 degs C, only set in July, and the 'highest' minimum temperature for August previously was 11.5 degs C in 2004.
The warmest night of the month was the 14th/15th, with a 'low' of 20.4 degs C.  This was one of three nights this month that exceeded the previous 'highest minimum' ever at this location* of 19.8 degs C, itself set as recently as the 30th/31st July.   This means that the previous highest minimum ever figure* of 19.2 degs C set in July 2006, was exceeded seven times in July and August 2013!
The average night-time temperature for August 2013 was 16.92 degs C.  This was slightly down on July [17.09 degs C] but still becomes the highest August figure ever*, pushing 2012's 16.07 degs C into second place.

Temperature: [Maximum]:
Daytime temperatures ranged from 18.3 degs C on the 31st, to 25.1 degs C on the 2nd.  This was the only day of the month which exceeded 25 degs C, but it was still the warmest August day since 2006, though not a fine summer's day - see 'thunder' below!

The 31st was one of only three days in the month where the temperature did not exceed 20 degs C.  The others were the 24th and 25th, which coincidentally were the Saturday and Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend.
The average maximum temperature for the month was 22.42 degs C, [July = 23.45 degs C], but this still makes it the warmest August since 2004, [22.52 degs C], therefore exceeding the August average for the 'good' summer of 2006 [22.1].

Rainfall:
95.5 mm of rain fell during August 2013, making it the wettest month since May 2013.  It was a lot wetter than July [36.2 mm], but a lot drier than August 2012 [149.1 mm]!  It also turned out to be the third driest August of the last six.
The wettest day itself was the 5th [!], with a total of 39.6 mm falling, mainly during the morning. This was the wettest day since March 21st, and the wettest August day since 2010 when the 25th saw 45.9 mm.
Around two-thirds of the month's total rain [61.6 mm] had fallen by the 5th, with most of the remainder [28.3 mm] falling from the 14th to the 18th.  This left the rest of the month mainly dry, although there were only 10 completely dry days, and 16 days with no measurable rain.  Only 1.7 mm of rain fell after the 18th.

Cumulatively, 669.6 mm of rain has now fallen during 2013, compared to 744.8 by the end of August 2012.

Thunder:
There was an afternoon thunderstorm followed by showers with thunder during the evening of the 2nd - which was also the month's warmest day.

*Since at least 2004.

July 2013 Summary

In Brief:
A very warm and record-breaking month with mainly dry weather until the last 8 days.

Temperature: [Minimum]:
The lowest temperature recorded for the month was 13.5 degs C on the night of the 11th/12th.  This is the first month since records began here in October 2003 where the temperature has never fallen below that figure. Previously the highest minimum was 11.5 degs C, recorded in August 2004 and July 2010.

The warmest night of the month was that of the 30th/31st with a minimum of 19.8 degs C, the highest minimum ever recorded at this site.*  Until July 2013 this figure was 19.2 degs C, from July 2006, however that record was broken four times this month - the other three times being every night from the 22nd/23rd to the 24th/25th.

The average minimum for July 2013 was 17.09 degs C, not surprisingly given the above, the highest of any month at this location.*  Second highest is now August 2012 [16.07], and July 2006 becomes third [15.58].

Temperature: [Maximum]:
The coolest day of the month was the 11th, where the temperature did not rise above 19.3 degs C, which infact was recorded the previous evening at 2200.  This is not a record however, as in July 2006 the lowest maximum was 20.5 degs C, and in July 2010 it was 19.8.  19.3 degs C is, however, the third warmest 'coolest day' of a month, tying with August 2005.
The highest maximum of July 2013 was 28.5 degs C on the 14th, the second hottest day ever at this location*, with 28.9 being the highest on 19th July 2006.

The hottest day of the month was only three days after the coolest, and from the 12th to the 13th the maximum temperature rose by 7.4 degs C, from 20.2 on the 12th, to 27.6 on the 13th. This 'unusual' heat for West Cornwall was due to the high pressure area moving to a position whereby the airflow arrived in this area from the north-east, the only one of the main eight compass points where there is a distance of over 30 miles of land, rather than water, upwind.
The average daytime temperature for July 2013 was 23.45 degs C, the second warmest month ever at this location*, with July 2006 in first place with 24.68 degs C.

The temperature exceeded 20 degs C on 29 days in July 2013, with the 2nd and 11th the only two days missing out. In July 2010 20 degs C was exceeded 30 times, and in July 2006 it was exceeded on all 31 days.
Perhaps the most disappointing statistic for July 2013 is that the temperature only exceeded 25 degs C on 4 days [7th, 13th, 14th and 18th], compared to 8 times in July 2005, and 10 times in July 2006.
This was due, in part, to the high pressure area not remaining in the optimum position described above for more than a few days, plus the fact that the anticyclone moved away completely with over a week of the month still to go.
Positively however, it was sunny, or mainly sunny, every day from the 5th to the 20th, excluding the mornings of the 11th and 12th.

Rainfall:
36.2 mm of rain fell during the month, making it the driest of any month since March 2012, and the driest July since at least 2007.  [Unfortunately rainfall records were not kept here in July 2006].
This figure compares with 81.7 mm of rain in June 2013, and 104.8 mm in July 2012.
The wettest day itself was the 24th, with 14.9 mm of rain.

There were 20 completely dry days in July 2013, the most of any of the last 6 Julys, and it was completely dry from the 5th to the 22nd.  There were also 23 days with no measurable rain.
Cumulatively in 2013 there has now been 574.1 mm of rain up to the end of July, compared with 595.7 mm for the same period in 2012.  This is the first end of month figure where the total of rain so far has been lower for 2013 than 2012.  At the end of March 2013, 2013 had seen 180 mm more than 2012!

No thunder during the month.

June 2013 Summary

In Brief:
Cool by day, warm by night.  Dry and mainly fine weather during the first and last weeks. Unsettled in between with periods of rain and showers.

Temperature: [Minimum]:
The coolest night-time temperature was 10.1 degs C on the night of the 3rd/4th. Since at least 2004, only in 2010 has the minimum temperature not dropped below this level during June.
The highest night-time temperature of the month was 17.1 degs C on the night of the 28th/29th, which was the second warmest June night at this location*.  The warmest June night itself was 17.8 degs C in 2010.
The average night-time temperature for June 2013 was 13.89 degs C, the highest of the last ten Junes.

Temperature: [Maximum]:
The coolest day of June 2013 was the fine and sunny, though breezy, 4th, with 15.8 degs C.  The last four Junes have seen colder days than this.
The warmest day of June 2013 was the 29th, with 22.3 degs C, which is the lowest June maximum at this location.*
This gave an average daytime temperature of 19.46 degs C, which is the 8th coolest of the last ten Junes, but the warmest since 2010.
The temperature exceeded 20 degs C on 10 days in June 2013, which is the second lowest number of times at this location.*  In 2011 it happened only 9 times.  The temperature took longer to exceed 20 degs C this year than in any year since 2004, finally doing so on June 7th.
The last time the temperature exceeded 25 degs C in June was in 2010.

Rain:
81.7 mm of rain fell during June 2013, which compares with 129.7 in June 2012, and 94.7 in May 2013.
The wettest individual 'day' was the 8th, with 28.8 mm, however this is misleading as all that day's rain fell by about 9 am during a thunderstorm, and the remainder of the day was fine and sunny.
The next wettest day after that was the 20th, [9.1 mm], with the 22nd [9.0 mm], 17th [7.8], 12th [7.0 mm] and 11th [5.2mm] being the only other days with over 4 mm of rain.
All the month's measurable rain fell from the 8th to the 23rd. There were 15 completely dry days, and 17 with no measurable rain.
Cumulatively, 537.9 mm of rain has fallen during the first half of 2013, compared with 490.9 mm in the same period in 2012.

Thunder:
Thunder was prevalent on the morning of the 8th during a 3 to 4 hour intense thunderstorm.

May 2013 Summary

In Brief:
Cool days, with a complete absence of any days over 20 degs C.  Wet in total, but with alternate dry and wet periods.

Temperature: [Nights]:
Night-time temperatures ranged from 6.4 degs C on the night of the 25th/26h, to 14.0 degs C on the night of the 7th/8th.  This gave an average of 10.05 degs C, which is midway in the table of the last ten Mays.
The temperature never fell below 5 degs C, which has only happened 5 times in the last ten Mays - all in 2005 or 2010.

Temperature: [Days]:
On Friday the 24th the maximum temperature was just 12.2 degs C, making it the coldest May day at this location since 14th May 2005.  Temperatures recovered somewhat by the following Friday [31st] however, as this was the warmest day of the month with 18.7 degs C.  This in itself was the lowest ever May maximum at this location* by some margin, as previously this had been 20.8 degs C in 2005.  This means that the temperature never reached 20 degs C during May 2013 - the first time this has [not] happened since at least 2003, and which happened ten times in May 2004!
The average daytime temperature for May 2013 was 16.23, not surprisingly the coldest of the last ten Mays, and pushes May 2005 into second place.

Rain:
94.7 mm of rain fell during the month, making it the wettest May of the last six.  Less than 50 mm of rain has fallen in each of the last four Mays, with just 36.6 mm in May 2012.  April 2013 saw just 39.2 mm.
The wettest day itself was the 14th with 28.2 mm of rain falling, making it the wettest May day at this location since at least 2007.
There were 16 completely dry days in May 2013, which is perhaps surprisingly the second highest number of the last six, beaten only by 2012.  This was due to the rain this month coming in more marked wet periods, and there being just one day with only a 'Trace' of rain, rather than several in previous years.
These wet periods were the 7th to the 16th, and the 27th to the 29th.
The first six days of the month saw just 0.8 mm of rain, and the period 17th to 22nd was completely dry.

Cumulatively to the end of May, 456.2 mm of rain has fallen in 2013 compared to 361.5 mm in 2012 - an increase of 26.2 %.

*Since at least 2003.

Dates of Reaching 20 Degrees C

Here are the dates from the last 9 years when 20 degrees C was first reached at this location in that year:

2004 - April 26
2005 - May 1
2006 - April 25
2007 - April 22
2008 - May 4
2009 - May 31
2010 - April 26
2011 - April 25
2012 - May 23

As of May 28, 20 degrees C is yet to be reached in 2013.  As can be seen above it has always happened in either April or May [On 5 out of 9 occasions between April 22 and 26]!
2009 was the year it took longest to attain that temperature, until May 31 in fact, but with just 3 days to go will this year set a new record and 20 degrees C not occur until June?

April 2013 Summary

In Brief:
A very cold first week, particularly by day.  Mainly dry, apart from the second week.

Temperature [Minimum]:
The lowest night-time temperature of the month was 0.3 degs C, on the night of the 2nd/3rd. This was the second coldest April night [since at least 2004] at this location, narrowly missing the coldest ever, which was 0.2 in April 2008.
Conversely, the mildest night of April 2013, 13.7 degs C on the night of the 13th/14th, was the warmest ever April night of the last ten Aprils at this location.
The average night-time temperature for April 2013 was 8.33 degs C, making it the third warmest of the last ten, behind 2007 and 2011, however please see note * below.

There were at least five nights where the minimum temperature fell below 5 degs C during the month, all of which occurred during the first week.

Temperature [Maximum]:
The coldest day of the month was the 1st with a maximum of 7.1 degs C**.  This was easily the coldest ever April day [since at least 2004] at this location, the previous being 8.8 degs C in 2012.
The warmest day of the month was the 23rd, where the temperature reached 19.7 degs C.
The average daytime temperature for the month was 13.9 degs C, the second lowest of the last ten, with 2012 being the coldest with 13.41 degs C, however please see note * below.

* There were no individual reports for three days this month, although extremes for this period are still noted.  Normally these short and rare breaks are insignificant in calculating averages, however this break occurred during a very cold spell, meaning that all figures 'lost' were below the average without them.   Therefore I have calculated estimates, which are:
Minimum: 7.76 degs C [replacing 8.33]
Maximum: 13.4 degs C [replacing 13.9].
Using the estimates, this April's night-time average temperature is still the third highest of the last ten, however it now becomes the coldest for daytime temperatures, slightly colder than 2012 [13.41].

** It is possible that the maximum temperature was below 7.1 degs C on the 5th and 6th.

Rainfall:
39.2 mm of rain fell during the month, making it the driest of any month since March 2012, and the fourth driest April of the last six.  The wettest day itself was the 13th, with 10 mm of rain.
There were approximately 13 completely dry days, and approximately 17 with no measurable rain.
35.6 mm of the total rainfall fell from the 8th to the 17th.

Cumulatively, 361.5 mm of rain has now fallen during the first four months of 2013, which is the same amount as fell during the first five in 2012.  The figure to April 2012 was 324.9 mm, so 2013 is still 36.6 mm ahead.

March 2013 Summary

In Brief:
A very cold month, particularly for March, but with two wet and milder spells.

Temperature: [Minimum]:
The coldest night of the month was that of the 11th/12th when the temperature fell to -2.3 degs C. This was the coldest night since February 2nd/3rd 2012 and the coldest March night ever at this location*.
The highest minimum in March 2013 was 13.4 degs C on the night of the 7th/8th, which was actually the warmest ever March night* by some margin.  Previously this was 11.4 degs C, set in March 2010.

Despite this mild night however, the average minimum temperature for March 2013 was just 5.64 degs C, making it the coldest month for nights since February 2012, and the second coldest for March since at least 2004.  2010 was the coldest with 4.94 degs C.
Average night-time temperatures have fallen every month since August 2012.

The temperature fell below 5 degs C during the month on 15 nights, the most number of times of any month since January 2011, and the second most for March*.  Once again 2010 took first place with 18.
The temperature also fell below 0 degs C once, for the first time since February 2012.

Temperature: [Maximum]:
The coldest day of the month was the 11th with 3.2 degs C.  It was the coldest March day ever at this location,* again by some margin.  5.8 degs C was the previous coldest March maximum, set in 2005.
It wasn't the coldest day of winter 2012/13 however, as the maximum was just 2.8 degs C on January 20th.
The warmest day of the month was the 8th, with 16.6 degs C - the warmest day since October 2012.

The average daytime temperature for March 2013 was 9.85 degs C, making it the coldest ever March at this location*, again by some margin.  Previously March 2006 held this honour with 11.38 degs C.
March 2013 was also the coldest of any month for average daytime temperature since January 2011 [9.83 degs C], and the 5th coldest month ever at this location*.
As with night-time temperatures, the daytime average has fallen every month since August 2012.

Rainfall:
119.3 mm of rain fell during March 2013, making it the wettest March of the last 5.  Previously this was March 2010 with 90.8 mm.  The total compares with 130.9 mm in January 2013, 72.0 mm in February 2013, and 25.6 mm in March 2012.
The wettest day itself was the 21st with 44.3 mm, which was the wettest day since November 24th 2012, and the 5th wettest day ever at this location, [since at least April 2008].

Despite the highish rainfall totals, there were 12 completely dry days, and 19 with no measurable rain during the month.  This was the least number for March though, following the run of comparatively dry Marches during the last few years.
Most of the month's rain fell from the 15th to the 22nd, with just 0.4 mm falling by the 6th, 0 mm from the 11th-14th, and 0.7 from the 23rd.

The temperature fell below 5 degs C eight times during the month, the most of any month since February 2012, but the 4th fewest number of times of the last ten Februaries.

Temperature: [Maximum]:
The coldest day of February 2013 was the 22nd with 3.8 degs C.  This was the 4th coldest February day of the last 10 at this location, with the other three all occurring in February 2012.  The warmest day of the month was the 13th, with 14.8 degs C. As with January, the coldest and warmest days were both adjacent to the coldest and warmest nights.

The average maximum for February 2013 was 10.19 degs C, making it the coldest month for daytime temperature since February 2012, and the 5th coldest of the last ten Februaries. It was, however, very close to the averages of February 2012 [10.14], and February 2010 [10.18].

Rain:
72 mm of rain fell during the month, making February 2012 the second driest of the last five Februaries, and the driest of any month since September 2012.
This compares to 130.9 mm in January 2013, and 45.8 mm in February 2012.
The wettest day was the 1st, with 13.9 mm, which is the lowest total for a 'wettest' day since May 2012.
The 1st was only just the wettest day though, as both the 10th and 13th had over 13 mm of rain.
There were 15 completely dry days, which is the most in any month since September 2012, and the second highest for February, just beaten by 2012 with 16.
There was no measurable rain from the 15th onwards.

Cumulatively, 202.9 mm of rain has fallen during the first two months of 2013, compared to 115.8 mm in the same period in 2012.

January 2013 Summary

In Brief:
Fairly mild, especially at night, with around average rainfall.

Temperature: [Minimum]:
Night-time temperatures for the month ranged from 0.6 degs C on the night of the 19th/20th [the coldest night since February 2012], to 13.9 degs C on the night of the 28th/29th, which was the mildest ever January night at this location.*  The average night-time temperature for the month was 7.95 degs C, narrowly exceeding 2012's figure of 7.76 degs C, to make January 2013 the mildest January for nights since at least 2003.  It was cooler than the previous month [December 2012] however, with it's average of 8.74 degs C.
The temperature fell below 5 degs C on 4 nights, the most since April 2012, but the equal fewest for January*[with 2007].

Temperature: [Maximum]:
The coldest day of the month was the 20th with a maximum of 2.8 degs C. This was the coldest day since February 2012 and the equal coldest for a January day* [with 2010].
Conversely, the mildest day of the month, 15.8 on the 29th, was the warmest January day ever at this location.*   This led to an average of 11.52 degs C, making it the warmest January [days] since 2008, and the 4th warmest of the last ten.
It is interesting to note that the month's coldest night and day were on the same date, as were it's warmest night and day. Although logical, this rarely occurs in reality.

Rainfall:
130.9 mm of rain fell during the month. This is almost twice as much as the 70 mm in January 2012, but less than half the 288.9 mm in December 2012.
It was the driest month since September 2012 and the 3rd wettest [or driest] January of the last 5.
The wettest day of the month was the 18th with 29.7 mm, which was the wettest January day since at least 2008.
There were 6 completely dry 24-hr periods [2200-2200], and 10 with no measurable rain.  The longest spell with no measurable rain was 4 days from the 2nd to the 5th, however only 29.2 mm of rain had fallen by the end of the 17th.  This total had more than doubled by the end of the next day, with the remaining 101.7 mm falling from the 18th.

Thunder:
Thunder occurred on the 18th.
