November 2011 Summary

Summary:
A mild and comparatively dry November. There was very little variation between maximum temperatures throughout the month, thus an absence of cold spells.

Temperature: Minimum:
Night-time temperatures ranged from 3.3 degs C on the night of the 6th/7th [the coldest night since 18th/19th March], to 13.6 degs C on the night of the 12th/13th.
Last November's minimum temperature was -3.8 degs C, 7.1 degs colder than this.
This gave an average night-time figure of 10.22 degs C, which is the highest for any November at this location, and is way above second placed 2009 which saw 8.95 degs C.
It was also warmer than this April [8.78] and over 4 degs warmer than November 2010 [6.2].
This is even more remarkable now that a new more reliable thermometer is being used, which seems to record around 1 deg C lower than the previous one.
There was only one night where the temperature fell below 5 degs C, compared to 12 in November 2010.

Temperature: Maximum:
Daytime temperatures ranged from 10.9 degs C on the 7th [the coldest day since March 13th], to 15.8 degs C on the 11th, just four days later.
10.9 was the highest ever 'minimum' November daytime temperature* and 15.8 the second lowest* 'maximum' which illustrates the narrow range of maximum temperatures the month produced. All this led to an average of 14.01 degs C, which is second equal warmest for November* [with 2006], the mildest being 2007.

Rainfall:
76.3 mm of rain fell during the month, which made it the driest November since at least 2008. This compares with 112.8 mm in October, and 183.8 mm in November 2010.
The wettest day itself was the 16th with 19.6 mm, however the period from the 12th to the 15th was completely dry, and only 3.5 mm fell from the 17th to the 27th.
In total there were 11 dry days, 5 more than the previous highest for November.

*Since at least 2003.

October 2011 Summary

Summary:
October 2011 started dry, fine and warm, but soon became cloudier and cooler for the remainder of the month.
As will be seen below, the exceptional temperatures experienced in the south-east, did not apply here. Infact, October 2011 was nothing special at all!
Although mainly dry at first and around the middle of the month, the second week was annoyingly damp, and the last week was very wet.

Minimum:
Night-time temperatures ranged from 6.0 degs C on the night of the 25th/26th, to 15.5 degs C on the night of the 4th/5th, which was the equal third highest October night-time temperature ever at this location*
The average minimum temperature for the month was 11.64 degs C, making it overall the third warmest October [nights] since at least 2003.
Nights in October 2011 were also, on average, warmer than those in April and May 2011.

Maximum:
Temperatures exceeded 19 degs C on the first 5 days of the month, peaking at 20.1 on the 2nd. This was the 2nd highest October temperature ever at this location* - the highest being 20.2 degs C recorded on the 29th[!] in 2006.
These are the only two occasions where the temperature has exceeded 20 degs C in October.*
Despite the media attention focussed on the unusually high temperatures at the beginning of the month, those values did not apply here.
The coldest day of the month was the 28th, a mostly sunny day with light winds, however the temperature only reached 12.7 degs C, which was the coldest day since 19th March, and the coldest October day since the 31st in 2008.
The average maximum for the month turned out to be 16.47 degs C, which was half way down [and up] in the chart of the last 9, and was, despite the media coverage, lower than the average maximum for April 2011!

Rainfall:
112.8 mm of rain fell during the month - the most since January 2011, and the most for October since at least 2007.
This compares with 72.3 mm in September 2011, and 98.1 mm in October 2010.
The wettest individual day was the 24th, with 39.5 mm. This was the wettest day since 12th June, and the wettest ever October day at this location.**
There were 9 completely dry days, the least of any October since at least 2007.
The first three days, with no measurable rain, when added to the last 4 of September, made a dry spell of 7 days, and only 3.9 mm of measurable rain fell from the 7th to the 23rd.
The last 8 days of the month saw 99.5 mm of rain.

* = Since at least 2002.

September 2011 Summary

Summary:
September 2011 was a fairly uneventful month weatherwise.
Annoyingly, a little rain, or drizzle, fell on most days, leading to there being no lengthy dry, fine spells.
There was often a lot of cloud, which kept daytime temperatures rather low, but night-time temperatures relatively high.
The last week, although dry with high pressure, saw a lot of mist and fog, which eventually cleared on most days to leave brighter afternoons. Unfortunately the western proximity of Falmouth ensured that it once again missed out on the fine weather of further east.
This has been a recurring problem of summer 2011, as any high pressure systems that did occur over the UK, were mainly too far east, giving rise to a southerly moisture-gathering airflow, and placing West Cornwall closer to low pressure systems.
One interesting weather feature did occur however - during the late morning of the 9th - another typically misty, overcast and gloomy day - a thunderstorm developed, very rare during these conditions. Most of the associated rain fell further north and east, however there were several instances of thunder and lightning here.

Temperature: Minimum:
Night-time temperatures ranged from 8.9 degs C on the night of the 22nd/23rd, to 16.5 degs C on the 8th/9th [the warmest night since that of the 20th/21st August 2010]. This gave an average of 13.29 degs C - the highest of any month since August 2010, and the second highest of the last eight Septembers, behind 2006.

Temperature: Maximum:
Daytime temperatures ranged from 16.9 degs C on the 18th to 21.1 degs C on the 2nd, giving an average of 18.83 degs C.
Unsurprisingly it was the coolest month since May 2011, however it was also the coolest September of the last 8, although very close to most.
Another feature of the uninteresting nature of the month was that the range of maximum temperatures was just 4.2 degs C. September 2008 had a similar range of just 4.0 degs C.

Rainfall:
72.3 mm of rain fell during the month, comparing to 54.7 in August 2011 and 102.7 in September 2010. It was the second wettest September of the last four, and the wettest month since June.
The wettest day was the 20th when 18.0 mm fell. The wettest spell was from the 3rd to the 6th, when a total of 28.7 mm fell, but outside of that period rain amounts were mostly of the annoying, rather than useful, category.
There were 9 completely dry days, the least since May.
The first two days of the month added to the last five of August to give a 7-day dry spell, and no measurable rain fell on the last four days of the month. Outside of these times, the maximum number of consecutive completely dry 24-hr periods was 2.

Thunder:
A thunderstorm occurred around midday on the 9th.

July 2011 Summary

Summary:
July 2011, like June before it, was colder than average, particularly the third week, and there was once again a complete absence of any hot weather. It was, however, drier than recent Julys, and unlike June before it there were quite well defined dry and wetter spells.

Temperature: Minimum:
The night of the 20th/21st June saw the temperature drop to 8.3 degs C, making it the coldest ever June night at this location.* Previously this had been 9.4 degs C in 2007.
The highest night-time temperature was 16.2 degs C, on the nights of both the 4th/5th and 25th/26th.
This gave an average minimum of 13.25 degs C, the second coldest of the last 8 ahead of July 2007's 13.01 degs C.

Temperature: Maximum:
The lowest daytime temperature recorded this July was 15.1 degs C on the 20th. This was the lowest ever July maximum at this location.* Previously 15.7 had that title in 2008.
The maximum was 23.5 degs C, reached on the 24th, giving an average of 20.76 - the coldest ever July at this location, beating 2007 [20.82] into second place.
The temperature exceeded 20 degs C on 23 days, the lowest number of times of the last 7 Julys, equal to 2007 and 2008.
From Saturday the 16th to Friday the 22nd, [a typical holiday week], the temperature never exceeded 20 degs C at all.
For the second summer month in a row the temperature did not exceed 25 degs C, a figure that has not yet been exceeded in 2011 in any month.
The warmest spells were from the 11th to 13th, and 24th to 30th.

*It should be noted that a new, more reliable thermometer was in use this month, which may read maximum temperatures around 0.5 to 1 degree lower than the previous one.
This may slightly affect comparisons described in this section.

Rainfall:
58.1 mm of rain fell during the month, making it the driest of the last four Julys. This compares to 75.1 mm in July 2010 and 85 mm in June 2011.
The wettest day itself was the 5th, with 12 mm, and there were 15 completely dry days, 6 more than in June.
The month started with a continuation of the dry spell that began on June 26th, there was no rain until the 5th. It became mostly dry again from the 9th to the 14th, with only 0.6 mm of rain.
The second wet spell of the month ran from the 15th to the 20th - coinciding with the first half of the cold week already mentioned above.
From the 21st to the 30th, another mainly dry period saw just 1 mm of rain.

Thunder:
None was heard during the month.

June 2011 Summary

Summary:
June 2011 was generally a cool and wet month with only a few short spells of fine weather - notably at the beginning and end of the month. The rest of the time, despite some drier and brighter days, it was often windy and therefore felt much colder than the temperature readings might suggest.

Temperature: Minimum:
Night-time temperatures ranged from 8.4 degs C on the night of the 9th/10th, to 16.4 degs C on the night of the 4th/5th - giving an average of 12.07 degs C.
Despite 16.4 being the third warmest June night at this location* [the two highest both being in 2010], on average it was the second coldest of the last eight, beaten only by June 2008.

Temperature: Maximum:
On the 17th the maximum temperature was just 15.7 degs C, which equals the third coldest June day ever at this location* [the two coldest both being in 2009].
The warmest day of June 2011 was the 4th, with 24.8 degs C, which is the second lowest 'warmest day of June' of the last eight - beaten only by June 2007.
This gave an average maximum temperature for June 2011 of just 19.31 degs C, which is only 2.38 degs higher than the average for April 2011, but more notable perhaps is that it is way below the next coldest June of the last eight, 2007, with 20.67 degs.

The maximum temperature this June exceeded 20 degs C only nine times, and of the last eight Junes, that is 10 times less than the previous lowest of 19 times in 2008!
It is the 4th June since 2003 that there have been no days above 25 degs C.

*It should be noted that a new, more reliable thermometer was in use this month, which may read maximum temperatures around 0.5 to 1 degree lower than the previous one.
This may slightly affect comparisons described in this section.

Rainfall:
85 mm of rain fell in June 2011, making it the wettest June of at least the last four, and the wettest month since February 2011.
The wettest day itself was the 12th, with 41.2 mm falling, more than the total amount that fell in any of the previous three Junes. It was also the wettest day of any month since 25th August 2010.
There were only 9 completely dry days, the least amount in any June of the last four, and the least since February 2011.
Between the 7th and 26th there was only one completely dry day.
There were, however, two dry spells - no measurable rain fell before the 7th, and after the 25th.

Thunder: No thunder was heard during the month.

May 2011 Summary

Summary:
May 2011 was a rather non-descript month with around average mimimum and maximum temperatures.
It was another dry month, following April, however there were no long marked dry spells and despite the overall dryness, rain fell on a good number of days. This made for a rather cloudy month generally with only a few sunny days.

Temperature: Minimum:
Night time temperatures ranged from 6.6 degs C on the night of the 24th/25th, to 13.5 degs C on the night of the 5th/6th, giving an average minimum of 10.42 degs C, the highest for May since 2008.
Although a minimum of 6.6 degs is low for May, it was a lot higher than 4.0 degs C, which was recorded in May 2010.

Temperature: Maximum:
Daytime temperatures ranged from 13.0 degs C on the 3rd to 20.9 degs C on the 10th. This was the second lowest May maximum of the last eight, just 0.1 degree above the lowest, 20.8, in 2005.
This May saw only three days with a maximum above 20 degs C, equal to the number in 2006. Only 2005 and 2009 from the last eight Mays had less.
The average maximum temperature of this May, however, was 17.83 degs C, the highest since 2008 and around the average for the last eight Mays, which implies the lack of any very warm spells was counter to the low number, or absence, of any particularly cool spells as well.

Rainfall:
22.7 mm of rain fell during the month, which compares to 11.1 mm in April, and 20.2 mm for May 2010.
The individual wettest day was the 1st, specifically during the morning, when 10 mm of rain fell. As events turned out, this heavy rain amounted to almost half of the month's total in the first sixtieth of the month!
Despite low total rainfall, there were only 13 completely dry days, well down on April's 21, but only one less than May 2010.
The longest dry spell was just five days, from the 12th to the 16th, however only 3.2 mm of rain fell in total between the 12th and 29th.

Thunder:
No thunder was heard during the month.

April 2011 Summary

Summary:
April 2011 will be best remembered for being a warm, very dry month with a good deal of sunshine.

Temperature: Minimum:
The coldest night of April 2011 was that of the 3rd/4th when the temperature fell to 5.1 degs C. It was thus the first month when the temperature did not drop below 5 degs C since September 2010, and the first time ever in any April at this location*.
The highest minimum [12.2 degs C] was recorded on the night of the 21st/22nd, and was the mildest night since that of 4th/5th November 2010. This equalled the mildest night of April 2010, and was otherwise only exceeded in April in 2007*.
The average for the month was 8.78 degs C, the highest ever recorded for April here*. Previously 2007 held that honour with 8.65 degs C.

Temperature: Maximum:
Daytime temperatures for April 2011 ranged from 13.7 on the 13th, to 21.5 on the 25th, which was the equal warmest ever April day at this location* [along with 28th April 2010].
The average for the month was 16.93 degs C, which was the highest ever recorded in April here* and as with minimum temperatures, this beat 2007 [with it's 16.78 degs] into second place.
The 25th however, was the only day that temperatures exceeded 20 degs C in April 2011, equal to 2006 and 2007, but lagging slightly behind 2010 when it did so twice.
Despite these record readings, it is clear that Falmouth did not enjoy the much higher temperatures experienced in many other parts of the UK during the month.

Rainfall:
The total rainfall for the month was just 11.1 mm, less than half of that of March, which was itself a very dry month with 22.7 mm. This compares to last April, 2010, when 34.3 mm of rain fell, and 140.3 mm in April 2009!
The 5th was the wettest day of April 2011 with 6.2 mm, and the only other day when more than 1 mm fell was the 13th with 3.5.
There were at least 21 totally dry days, equal to April 2010 and two more than March 2011. No rain fell between the 6th and the 12th, and only 0.5 mm fell after the 14th. Even the 29th, when thunder could be heard for several hours during the evening, remained totally dry.

Thunder:
As previously stated, thunder was heard for several hours during the evening of the 29th.

Night-time temperatures ranged from 0.3 degs C on the night of the 4th/5th, to 11.2 degs C on the night of the 30th/31st, giving an average of 5.96 degs C, which compares to a February minimum of 7.45 degs C.
This was not the first time the March minimum average has been below that of February however, as it also happened in both 2007 and 2008.
Six nights during March were colder than the minimum reached during February [3.1], although compared to other recent Marches, 2011 was only the third coldest of the last eight.
Conversely, the 11.2 recorded on the night of the 30th/31st was the second warmest March night at this location* - beaten only by 11.4 in 2010.

The temperature fell below 5 degs C 9 times during the month, the least number of occasions for March, but twice more than in February. Last March [2010] the minimum fell below 5 degs C 18 times!

Temperature [Maximum]:
Daytime temperatures ranged from 7.3 degs C on the 4th to 17.1 on the 30th, giving an average of 13.05.
Following the reverse trend against February found in the minimum figures, the 7.3 degs recorded was lower than any day during February, when 9.7 was the lowest. Four further days in March - [all in the first 6 days] - recorded lower temperatures than the February minimum.
After that time however, maxima recovered and the average of 13.05 was the 3rd highest of the last eight.
17.1 on the 30th made it the warmest day since 5 November 2010, and the warmest ever March day at this location*

Rainfall:
Probably the most significant feature of March 2011 was the lack of rainfall - with just 22.7 mm recorded for the whole month - making it the driest month since May 2010 [20.2mm] and the driest March of the last three - figures do not go back beyond 2009.
This compares to 101.3 mm in February 2011 and 90.8 in March 2010.
The wettest day was the 30th [also the warmest], with 9.0 mm, and a further 3.3 fell on the 31st**, so if it had not been for those last two days, March 2011 would have easily been the driest month ever recorded at this location.
In total there were 19 completely dry days - with no rain at all between the 1st and the 8th and the 19th and the 28th.

* Since 2004.
** Until 1400 only - however no more than 0.9 mm would have fallen between then and 2200 - the normal reading time.

February 2011 Summary

February 2011 can best be summed up as mild with not a lot of rain, but with no lengthy dry spells either.

Temperature [Minimum]:
The lowest night-time temperature was 3.1 degs C recorded on the night of the 13th and 14th. This is the first February that the temperature has not fallen below 3 degs C at this location* - Previously 2.6 was the highest February minimum in 2007.
The highest night-time temperature was 10.8 degs C recorded twice - on the nights of the 4th/5th and 9th/10th. This was the highest February minimum since 2008.
The average minimum temperature for the month was 7.45 degs C, narrowly beaten into second place by 2007 with 7.49 degs C.
The minimum temperature fell below 5 degs C on 7 nights this February, the fewest since October 2010 and compared with 17 in January and 21 in December.
This is also the 3rd fewest figure for February*, only 2007 and 2008 had less.
The absence of an air frost in February has now occurred 4 times in the last 8 years.

Temperature [Maximum]:
The coldest day of February 2011 was the 14th when the maximum was 9.7 degs C. This was the only day of the month that the temperature did not reach 10 degs C, and is the second highest February lowest maximum recorded here* - in 2008 the lowest recorded was 10.1 degs C.
The highest February maximum this month was 15 degs C recorded on the 24th, which was the warmest day since November 11th 2010, and the warmest February day since 2007.
The average maximum temperature for February 2011 was 12.62 degs C, the second highest at this location* and only beaten by 2008.

Rainfall:
A total of 101.3 mm of rain fell during the month, much less than the 180.2 mm in January 2011, but it was still the wettest February of the last three.
There were only 6 completely dry days^, mostly at the beginning of the month, which is the fewest since November 2010 and the lowest of the last three Februaries.
Although the total amount of rain in February was on the low side, there were no long periods of dry weather or periods with no measurable rain, although the mainly dry spell that began during the second half of January continued with only 8.6 mm of rain falling before the 10th February, this mostly on the 2nd.
The wettest day itself was the 13th with 16.7 mm. There were another five days on which more than 10 mm of rain fell, but these were well scattered throughout the last three weeks of the month [10th, 15th, 18th, 21st and 25th] ensuring the absence of any afore-mentioned lengthy dry spell.
There was at least some rain every day from the 13th to the 27th.

January 2011 Summary

Summary:
January 2011 began with generally lower temperatures than those with which December 2010 ended, particularly at night, before becoming much milder, but very wet, until the 17th.
Much drier, sunnier and colder weather then followed, although it was slightly less cold again around the 23rd to 26th with a little more rain. It then became dry again, but this time very cold with mainly cloudy skies for the last 5 days.
This colder weather was brought about by the wind being in the north-east or east for the last two weeks of the month, thereby cutting off the flow of more common mild south-westerly winds off the Atlantic. The north-easterly winds also led to the persistent cloud reported in the south-east of England being much less prevalent, particularly in the penultimate week, due to the high ground of Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor to the north-east.

Temperature [Min]:
Night time temperatures were in the range -2.5 degs C [on the nights of 29th/30th and 30th/31st] to 11.9 [12th/13th]. This equals [with 20th January 2008] the mildest January night ever at this location*.
The average night time temperature for the month was 4.4 degs C which is the second coldest for January recorded here* - 2010 was the coldest at 2.73.
The temperature fell below 5 degs C on 17 nights and below 0 degs C on 5 - both these figures are the second highest ever for January* and again 2010 had the highest with 23 and 9 times respectively.

Temperature [Max]:
Daytime temperatures were in the range of 4.2 degs C on the 28th, and 13.4 on the 12th. This maximum is the equal [with February 2009 and 2010] second lowest temperature ever reached in any month at this location*. In January 2009 the temperature did not rise above 13.3 degs C.
The average maximum temperature for January 2011 was 9.83 degs C, which is the second lowest ever for January at this location* - and again the lowest itself was 2010 [8.33].

For both night and day temperatures, January 2011 was therefore the second coldest January behind 2010.

Rainfall [Max]:
180.2 mm of rain fell during January 2011, with 174.2 mm of the total falling by the end of the night of the 17th/18th. This compares with 183.8 mm in November 2010, and 116.9 mm in January 2010.
The wettest day itself was the 7th, with 27.8 mm, but over 25 mm fell on two more days, namely the 10th [26.6mm] and 17th [25.1mm]. There were also 5 more days with over 13 mm of rain.
Even though 2011 was the wettest of the last three Januaries and had the highest daily total for a January day in those three years, it also had the highest number of dry days of the last three Januaries, with 12, of which 10 were after the 18th.
