June 2011 Summary

Summary:
June 2011 was generally a cool and wet month with only a few short spells of fine weather - notably at the beginning and end of the month. The rest of the time, despite some drier and brighter days, it was often windy and therefore felt much colder than the temperature readings might suggest.

Temperature: Minimum:
Night-time temperatures ranged from 8.4 degs C on the night of the 9th/10th, to 16.4 degs C on the night of the 4th/5th - giving an average of 12.07 degs C.
Despite 16.4 being the third warmest June night at this location* [the two highest both being in 2010], on average it was the second coldest of the last eight, beaten only by June 2008.

Temperature: Maximum:
On the 17th the maximum temperature was just 15.7 degs C, which equals the third coldest June day ever at this location* [the two coldest both being in 2009].
The warmest day of June 2011 was the 4th, with 24.8 degs C, which is the second lowest 'warmest day of June' of the last eight - beaten only by June 2007.
This gave an average maximum temperature for June 2011 of just 19.31 degs C, which is only 2.38 degs higher than the average for April 2011, but more notable perhaps is that it is way below the next coldest June of the last eight, 2007, with 20.67 degs.

The maximum temperature this June exceeded 20 degs C only nine times, and of the last eight Junes, that is 10 times less than the previous lowest of 19 times in 2008!
It is the 4th June since 2003 that there have been no days above 25 degs C.

*It should be noted that a new, more reliable thermometer was in use this month, which may read maximum temperatures around 0.5 to 1 degree lower than the previous one.
This may slightly affect comparisons described in this section.

Rainfall:
85 mm of rain fell in June 2011, making it the wettest June of at least the last four, and the wettest month since February 2011.
The wettest day itself was the 12th, with 41.2 mm falling, more than the total amount that fell in any of the previous three Junes. It was also the wettest day of any month since 25th August 2010.
There were only 9 completely dry days, the least amount in any June of the last four, and the least since February 2011.
Between the 7th and 26th there was only one completely dry day.
There were, however, two dry spells - no measurable rain fell before the 7th, and after the 25th.

Thunder: No thunder was heard during the month.

* = Since 2004
