January 2013 Summary

In Brief:
Fairly mild, especially at night, with around average rainfall.

Temperature: [Minimum]:
Night-time temperatures for the month ranged from 0.6 degs C on the night of the 19th/20th [the coldest night since February 2012], to 13.9 degs C on the night of the 28th/29th, which was the mildest ever January night at this location.*  The average night-time temperature for the month was 7.95 degs C, narrowly exceeding 2012's figure of 7.76 degs C, to make January 2013 the mildest January for nights since at least 2003.  It was cooler than the previous month [December 2012] however, with it's average of 8.74 degs C.
The temperature fell below 5 degs C on 4 nights, the most since April 2012, but the equal fewest for January*[with 2007].

Temperature: [Maximum]:
The coldest day of the month was the 20th with a maximum of 2.8 degs C. This was the coldest day since February 2012 and the equal coldest for a January day* [with 2010].
Conversely, the mildest day of the month, 15.8 on the 29th, was the warmest January day ever at this location.*   This led to an average of 11.52 degs C, making it the warmest January [days] since 2008, and the 4th warmest of the last ten.
It is interesting to note that the month's coldest night and day were on the same date, as were it's warmest night and day. Although logical, this rarely occurs in reality.

Rainfall:
130.9 mm of rain fell during the month. This is almost twice as much as the 70 mm in January 2012, but less than half the 288.9 mm in December 2012.
It was the driest month since September 2012 and the 3rd wettest [or driest] January of the last 5.
The wettest day of the month was the 18th with 29.7 mm, which was the wettest January day since at least 2008.
There were 6 completely dry 24-hr periods [2200-2200], and 10 with no measurable rain.  The longest spell with no measurable rain was 4 days from the 2nd to the 5th, however only 29.2 mm of rain had fallen by the end of the 17th.  This total had more than doubled by the end of the next day, with the remaining 101.7 mm falling from the 18th.

Thunder:
Thunder occurred on the 18th.

*Since at least 2003.
