May 2013 Summary

In Brief:
Cool days, with a complete absence of any days over 20 degs C.  Wet in total, but with alternate dry and wet periods.

Temperature: [Nights]:
Night-time temperatures ranged from 6.4 degs C on the night of the 25th/26h, to 14.0 degs C on the night of the 7th/8th.  This gave an average of 10.05 degs C, which is midway in the table of the last ten Mays.
The temperature never fell below 5 degs C, which has only happened 5 times in the last ten Mays - all in 2005 or 2010.

Temperature: [Days]:
On Friday the 24th the maximum temperature was just 12.2 degs C, making it the coldest May day at this location since 14th May 2005.  Temperatures recovered somewhat by the following Friday [31st] however, as this was the warmest day of the month with 18.7 degs C.  This in itself was the lowest ever May maximum at this location* by some margin, as previously this had been 20.8 degs C in 2005.  This means that the temperature never reached 20 degs C during May 2013 - the first time this has [not] happened since at least 2003, and which happened ten times in May 2004!
The average daytime temperature for May 2013 was 16.23, not surprisingly the coldest of the last ten Mays, and pushes May 2005 into second place.

Rain:
94.7 mm of rain fell during the month, making it the wettest May of the last six.  Less than 50 mm of rain has fallen in each of the last four Mays, with just 36.6 mm in May 2012.  April 2013 saw just 39.2 mm.
The wettest day itself was the 14th with 28.2 mm of rain falling, making it the wettest May day at this location since at least 2007.
There were 16 completely dry days in May 2013, which is perhaps surprisingly the second highest number of the last six, beaten only by 2012.  This was due to the rain this month coming in more marked wet periods, and there being just one day with only a 'Trace' of rain, rather than several in previous years.
These wet periods were the 7th to the 16th, and the 27th to the 29th.
The first six days of the month saw just 0.8 mm of rain, and the period 17th to 22nd was completely dry.

Cumulatively to the end of May, 456.2 mm of rain has fallen in 2013 compared to 361.5 mm in 2012 - an increase of 26.2 %.

*Since at least 2003.
