August 2014 Summary

In Brief:
Unsettled.  Warm during the first week, then cooler.  Third week particularly cool, specially at night.
Rainfall about average, but no prolonged dry spells and a very wet spell towards the end.

Temperature: Minimum:
The temperature fell to 6.9 degs C on the night of the 24th, making it the coldest August night at this location since at least 2003.
The warmest night of the month was the 5th, when the temperature fell to 16.4 degs C.
This led to an average minimum for the month of 12.97 degs C, which is the lowest of any August since at least 2003.

Temperature: Maximum:
On Bank Holiday Sunday 24th the maximum was just 17.2 degs C, making it the coolest August day since at least 2003.  Previously this was 17.4 degs C in 2011.
Conversely the hottest day of the month was the 5th with 26.1 degs C, which was the hottest August day since 2006. 
The average maximum for the month was 21.87 degs C, placing August 2014 exactly in the middle of the last eleven at 6th place.
There were 26 days with a maximum above 20 degs C.  All five days when this did not happen were between the 18th and the 24th. 
The temperature exceeded 25 degs C twice, [5th and 6th], the most number of times in August since 2006.

Rainfall:
83.3 mm of rain fell during the month, making it the wettest month since March 2014.  It was also wetter than June and July 2014 combined [76.7 mm].  It was, however, the driest August since 2011.
32.6 mm of rain fell in July 2014, and 95.5 mm in August 2013.
The wettest day of August 2014 was Bank Holiday Monday 25th with 18.3 mm, making it the wettest day since the 22nd May.
There were 8 completely dry days during the month, the least number since February, and 9 with no measurable rain, the fewest in August since at least 2007.
There were never more than 2 consecutive completely dry days, but the driest periods were the 13th to 16th [0.7 mm] and the 20th to 23rd [0.6 mm].  The wettest period was the 24th to the 27th [41.3 mm].


Cumulatively 865.9 mm of rain has fallen in 2014 to the end of August.  This compares with 669.6 mm for the same period in 2013 [+29.32%].
