August 2016 Summary

In Brief:
A decent amount of fine, dry and sunny weather with warm nights but no specially hot days.
An unsettled start and third week.

Temperature: [Minimum]:
The coolest night of the month was the 14th with a low of 11.1 degs C.  The temperature has fallen below this in every month since September 2013, and during every August since 2005, except in 2013.
The warmest night of the month was the 7th with a low of 17.2 degs C, which is the highest for August since 2013.
The average minimum temperature for August 2016 was 14.22 degs C, which is the 5th highest of the last thirteen Augusts, and the highest of any month since July 2014.

Temperature: [Maximum]:
The coolest day of the month was the 17th, a particularly miserable, gloomy and dull day, with a maximum of 17.6 degs C.
The highest temperature of the month was 22.8 degs C, recorded on the 6th and the 23rd.  This is the second lowest August maximum at this location since at least 2004, with only 2011 being lower [22.7].
The average maximum temperature for August 2016 was 20.57 degs C, which is the third lowest of the last thirteen Augusts, with 2011 and 2015 being lower in this case.
The temperature exceeded 20 degs C on 22 days of August 2016, which is the third lowest number of times it has done for August since at least 2004.  Once more 2011 and 2015 were the years that 2016 beat, or was equal to in this case.
The temperature has only exceeded 25 degs C during five of the last thirteen Augusts, and 2016 was not one of them.

Rainfall:
70.8 mm of rain fell during August 2016, which compares with 24.9 mm in July 2016, and 181.7 mm in August 2015.  Although it was the second driest August of the last nine [2011 was drier], it was the wettest month since March 2016.
The wettest day was the 1st, with 21.3 mm of rain.  Most of the month's rain fell during the 1st and 2nd, and from the 17th to 21st, with 16.2 mm on the 2nd, and a total of 20.0 mm on the 18th/19th.
There was no measurable rain from the 8th to the 16th and only 3.1 mm from the 3rd to the 17th.
From the 22nd to the 27th only 0.8 mm of rain fell.
In total there were 16 completely dry days and 17 with no measurable rain, which are the most for August since 2011.

Cumulatively:
802.1 mm of rain has fallen during the period January to August 2016, which compares with 789.4 mm during the same period in 2015 [+1.61%].  This has come down from +20.34% to the end of July, and from +40.58% to the end of June. 
Taking July and August together, 95.7 mm of rain fell in the two months in 2016, compared with 286.9 mm in 2015 [-66.64%], thus bringing the totals for the two years so far very close.
