January 2016 Summary

In Brief:
Slightly colder than average by night and day, and very wet.

Temperature: [Minimum]:
The coldest night of January 2016 was the 15th/16th with a minimum of -0.7 degs C.  This was the coldest night since 8th February 2015.   In January 2015 the temperature fell to -1.6 degs C.
The mildest night of the month was the 23rd/24th with 12.2 degs C, giving an average minimum for January 2016 of 6.11 degs C.  This is the 6th lowest of the last 13 Januaries.  It is also the lowest of any month since March 2015, though higher than January 2015 [4.64 degs C].
The temperature fell below 5 degs C on 11 nights during January 2016, which compares with 17 in January 2015. 
The temperature fell below 0 degs C on just the one night during January 2016, which is the first time since February 2015, and compares with 3 times in January 2015.

Temperature: [Maximum]:
The coldest day of January 2016 was the 15th with a maximum of 7.3 degs C.  This was the coldest day since 23rd February 2015.  In January 2015 the coldest day was 6.6 degs C.
The mildest day of the month was the 24th with 13.7 degs C.  Since 2004, only January 2009, 2011 and 2015 had their mildest days below this.
This gives an average daytime temperature for January 2016 of 10.58 degs C, which is the lowest of any month since February 2015, and like night-time temperatures, the 6th lowest of the last 13 Januaries.

Rainfall:
233.6 mm of rain fell during January 2016, compared with 154.1 mm in December 2015 and 188.7 mm in January 2015.  January 2016 was the wettest of any month since January 2014 which had 254.6 mm and was also the 2nd wettset January of the last 8 - behind 2014!

The wettest day of the month was the 26th with 22.3 mm, which was the wettest day since 13th August 2015, a day that saw more than double that amount [46.9 mm].
The first 4 days of 2016 were particularly wet, with a total of 61.8 mm of rain falling.  Other days joining the 1st, 3rd and 4th with more than 15 mm of rain were the 9th [16mm], 18th [16.5mm] and 22nd [17.3 mm].

There were 4 completely dry 24 hour periods [2200-2200] during the month, and 5 with no measurable rain.  On two occasions there were two consecutive days with no measurable rain - the 19th-20th and 24th-25th, although any benefit from these was negated by the amounts of rain, already mentioned, that fell on the 18th, 22nd and 26th!

Cumulatively:
233.6 mm of rain fell during January 2016, compared with 188.7 mm during the same period in 2015. [+23.8%].
