October 2014 Summary

In Brief:
Unsettled and rather on the warm side.

Temperature: Minimum:
Night-time temperatures ranged from 6.3 degs C on the night of the 6th/7th, to 15.5 degs C on the night of the 17th/18th.  This was higher than the warmest night in June 2014, [15.0 degs C], however it is not unusual for October as 8 of the last 12 October's warmest nights were between 15.0 and 15.7 degs C.
The average night-time temperature for October 2014 was 11.51 degs C, which is the 5th warmest of the last 12.

Temperature: Maximum:
The coolest day of October 2014 was the 13th with 11.9 degs C.  This was the coldest day since April. The 1st was the warmest day with 22.1 degs C.
This gave an average daytime temperature for the month of 17.56 degs C, making it the 3rd warmest October of the last 12.
The temperature exceeded 20 degs C on 5 days, including the 28th and 31st. This compares to 8 times in 2013, but between 2004 and 2012 it only happened 3 further times.

Rainfall:
132.8 mm of rain fell during October 2014, which compares with only 4.6 mm in September 2014, and 214.4 mm in October 2013.  Although October 2014 was much wetter than the month before it, it was the driest, or least wet, October since 2011.
The wettest day itself was the 6th with 39.2 mm, which was the 2nd wettest October day since at least 2008.  24th October 2011 was the wettest with 39.5 mm.  Two other days in October 2014 saw more than 15 mm, namely the 15th [22.2 mm] and the 17th [16.8 mm].
The longest completely dry spell was just 2 days [2nd and 3rd] but there was a 3-day period with no measurable rain from 25th to 27th.  Generally the second half of the month was drier than the first, with only 7.3 mm of rain falling between the 18th and the 28th.

Cumulatively 1003.3 mm of rain has now fallen in 2014 to the end of October.  This compares with 947.8 mm to the same period in 2013 [5.86%].  This has come down from +18.69% at the end of September due to the very wet October in 2013.

Thunder:
There was thunder on the 6th, 8th, 9th and 15th.
