January 2014 Summary

In Brief:
Very wet and often windy, with no prolonged dry periods.  Also very mild with no frost.

Temperature: [Minimum]:
Night-time temperatures ranged from 5.5 degs C on the night ending 5th, to 14.7 degs C on the night ending 15th, giving an average for the month of 9.25 degs C.
As was the case in December 2013, all these figures are the highest ever for January at this location, since at least 2003.
Previous highest records for January nights were: Minimum: 3.3 [2012];  Maximum:13.9 [2013]; Average: 7.95 [2013].
Also as in December, and for the first time since at least January 2003, there were no night-time minima below 5 degs C.

Temperature: [Maximum]:
Daytime temperatures ranged from 10.5 degs C on the 30th, to 16.4 degs C on the 5th, giving an average of 13.95 degs C.
As with nights, and with December 2013, once again all these figures are the highest ever for January at this location, since at least 2003.
Previous highest records for January days were: Minimum: 7.9 [2004];  Maximum: 15.8 [2013]; Average 12.37 [2008].
It should be noted that on several days in January 2014, due to the fast moving weather systems experienced during the month, the temperature reached it's peak during the evening, thereby distorting the true 'daytime' maximum and thus making the month appear, from the figures, milder than perhaps it actually was by day.

Rainfall:
254.6 mm of rain fell during January 2014, making it the wettest month since December 2012.  It was the wettest January at this location since at least 2009, easily pushing 2011's 180.2 mm into second place.
There was almost double [+94.5%] the amount of rain that fell in January 2013 [130.9], and about half as much [47%] more than in December 2013 [172.7 mm].
In 2012 it took until April 25th for the same amount of rain that fell in January 2014 to fall!

The wettest day [2200-2200] itself was the 26th with 23.4 mm, which is only the 7th wettest January day at this location since 2009.  This somewhat illustrates the speed and quantity of low pressure systems crossing the location during the month.    Other days with 20 or more mm of rain in the month were 31st [22.3]; 24th [22.7]; and 1st [20.0].

There were only 2 completely dry 24 hour periods [2200-2200], the equal lowest amount since December 2011.  These 24 hour periods were the 25th and the 30th, although it should be noted that the 11th was literally a dry 'day' as the rain that period fell during the night.
The 25th January 2014 was the first completely dry 2200-2200 period since 11th December 2013.
The driest 'spells' of weather during the month were 9th - 11th [5.2 mm], and 19th - 23rd [10.2 mm].

Thunder:
Thunder and lightning were experienced on the 1st, 3rd and 7th.  The brief thunderstorm on the 1st occurred just a few minutes after the turn of the year, and the thunderstorm during the early morning of the 7th was directly over this location.

Wind & Pressure:
It was very windy on the 1st, 5th and 6th.
Pressure was as low as 984 mbs on the 1st, and up to 1016 on the 25th. [2200].
